Felix Pedro discovered gold near Fairbanks in late July 1902 prompting him to exclaim "There's gold in them there hills" an infamous quote that has become synonymous with gold mining. Felix’s find triggered a full-scale gold rush and ultimately created the event now known in Fairbanks as Golden Days. A fun and rousing series of events that commemorate and celebrate our gold rush heritage. To this day there are large operating gold mines in the Fairbanks area, as well as tough as nails sourdoughs that go out to the bush and hope to get lucky on some remote parcel of land.
The 2011 dates for Golden Days are Wednesday, July 20 - Sunday, July 24, right in line with Felix’s miraculous discovery - and this year's theme is "For Gold Times' Sake." Rubber Duckie Race tickets are now available and will be until the race at 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 23, and the Grande Parade is scheduled for 10 am on Saturday, July 23.
