Is that shaken or stirred? Well maybe it’s neither when it
comes to curling, but there will be plenty of 007 jokes this weekend at the 77th Bonspiel at the Fairbanks Curling Club. This year’s themed event (Bondspiel) is in memory of Roger Moore (no, not that one), an ice
maker for the curling club for over 10 years. Rinks (teams) take to the ice
tonight, April 5, 2012 starting at 6:15 pm. There will be plenty of draws (games)
to watch throughout the weekend during the day, with finals scheduled to start
Sunday, April 8 at 2 pm.
While you’re rooting for your favorite rink enjoy some
entertainment! For a small $5 cover charge, listen to the powerful grooves of
one of Alaska’s premier live bands, Sweating Honey tomorrow night, April 6.
Entertainment is slated for each night. Check out the Fairbanks Curling Club
this weekend and rock it with the
curlers!
Haven’t gotten enough ice and snow this year? The powder
will fly next weekend, April 13 – 15, 2012 during the annual Arctic Man
Ski and Sno-Go Classic—head south to Summit Lake at mile 195 of the Richardson
Highway.
Each year the
small community of Paxson, Alaska swells from an average of 39 residents to
over 10,000! The energy is palpable on Summit Lake during the races. The
snowmobile engines hum as a rider awaits their skier after a 1,700 foot drop
from 5,800 feet in less than two miles. On-the-go the skier connects with the
rider via a tow rope and speeds back up the mountain at speeds reaching 86
miles per hour. It is Alaska grit and savvy at its finest.
With the snow
well on its way to melting, take advantage of these two great opportunities to
chill out once last time.
